As a freelancer you usually register as a sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) with the Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce, KvK). Without a KvK number you cannot invoice officially.
What is the KvK?
The Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce) registers all businesses in the Netherlands. After registration you receive a KvK number that is mandatory on your invoices.
Step 1: BSN
You need a Burgerservicenummer (BSN — Citizen Service Number). EU citizens register at the municipality; non-EU citizens also need a valid residence permit.
Step 2: Appointment
Book an appointment via kvk.nl. Registration costs €75.50 (one-off, 2026). You can register at a KvK office or online, depending on your situation.
Step 3: Documents
Bring valid ID, your BSN, your business name and a description of your activities (SBI code).
Step 4: What to arrange next
After KvK registration the Belastingdienst (Tax Administration) registers you automatically for VAT (BTW). You usually receive your OB number within two weeks. Then open a business bank account.
