As a freelancer you usually register as a sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) with the Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce, KvK). Without a KvK number you cannot invoice officially.
What is the KvK?
The Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce) registers all businesses in the Netherlands. After registration you receive a KvK number that is mandatory on your invoices.
Step 1: BSN
You need a Burgerservicenummer (BSN — Citizen Service Number). EU citizens register at the municipality; non-EU citizens also need a valid residence permit.
Step 2: Appointment
Book an appointment via kvk.nl. Registration costs €75.50 (one-off, 2026). You can register at a KvK office or online, depending on your situation.
Step 3: Documents
Bring valid ID, your BSN, your business name and a description of your activities (SBI code).
Step 4: What to arrange next
After KvK registration the Belastingdienst (Tax Administration) registers you automatically for VAT (BTW). You usually receive your OB number within two weeks. Then open a business bank account.
Sole proprietorship or partnership: which form fits?
If you work alone, the sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) is the simplest form: few formalities, but you are personally liable for your business debts. A private limited company (BV) offers more protection but more obligations. Consider another form only when turnover and risk justify it, and get advice first.
Choosing your business name and SBI code
You can choose your trade name yourself as long as it isn't misleading or already in use. The SBI code describes your activity; pick the code that fits your work best. You can list several codes and change them later.
What to arrange after registering
After registration you get a KvK number and the Tax Authority receives your details. You get a VAT identification number, set up a business bank account, consider disability insurance and start your records. Put your KvK number and VAT ID on every invoice.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to register with the KvK as a freelancer?
As a rule yes: if you run a business you must register in the Trade Register. If you doubt your situation, ask the KvK or an adviser.
Can I register online?
It depends on your situation. For many sole proprietorships it's possible online; sometimes an appointment is needed. Check kvk.nl for current options.
What does registration cost?
There is a one-off fee. The rate can change yearly; check the current amount on kvk.nl before booking.
Do I need to keep my details up to date with the KvK?
Yes. If your address or activity changes, or you stop your business, report it. That keeps your registration and invoices correct.
