A self-employed developer often works through an intermediary or directly for a company, hourly or at a day rate, and sometimes for several clients at once. The assignments pay well but carry risks: an unclear relationship with the client, hours that are not recognised and tooling costs you carry yourself.
Administration for developers: check the assignment, keep hours, store costs
Developers
You work by the hour or day for changing clients. SmartWerk keeps contract, hours, software costs and a tax indication together.
Start free, no credit card.
SmartWerk puts the emphasis on those points. With Assignment check you check the rate, a contract records the agreements, a project keeps hours together and purchase invoices keep your subscriptions. For tax there is an indicative estimate. This is not a legal assessment of your assignment.
Where it goes wrong in practice
A rate you do not work through
A good hourly rate disappears against unpaid hours, a gap between assignments and your own costs.
A relationship that resembles employment
If the collaboration mainly feels like employment, you want to record it carefully and have it assessed.
Subscriptions and tooling
Editors, hosting, cloud and test devices cost money every month. The invoices vanish in your mailbox.
Hours you must be able to show
With an intermediary or a company you want to show what you did when, by project and by day.

Assignment agreement
You record the agreements and have your client sign them.
Project per client
A project to which you link hours.
Hours per day
Record hours worked, per client and per project.
Subscriptions and tooling
Invoices for software, hosting and equipment with the file attached.
Invoice for the period
Make the invoice from your hours.

An estimate of tax and net income.

The tools that matter most here
Why this fits SmartWerk
Check and record
Assignment check and the contract are at the start of the chain. That suits work where the agreements matter as much as the hours.
Tooling as a register of its own
Purchase invoices are a separate register. Software and hosting sit neatly together, without changing your Expenses or the profit on the dashboard.
An indication, not advice
The tax calculator gives an indicative estimate. SmartWerk is not a tax adviser and does not claim to be.
Frequently asked questions
Does Assignment check say whether I am falsely self-employed?
No. Assignment check works through profitability and is not a legal or tax verdict. Read our checklist on false self-employment and ask for advice if in doubt.
Can I keep track of my subscriptions and hosting?
Yes. You store the invoices with the file attached as a purchase invoice. You can also record costs as an expense.
What do I need at minimum?
Assignment check, hours and the hourly rate calculator work independently of contracts. You add contracts, projects and the tax estimate when you need them.
Can I invoice by the hour or by the day?
Yes. You record hours and make the invoice from them, or you use a line with your day rate.
SmartWerk is invoicing and administration software for self-employed people, not a full accounting package and not a replacement for your bookkeeper or adviser.
